Welcome to the Serengeti Trip 2011 Blog

Welcome to the Serengeti Trip 2011 Blog! We designed this website so that we can keep you posted on planning, packing and progress of our massive 70-day trip through 6 African countries early in 2011. The trip starts 20 January 2011 in Pretoria, South Africa, and takes us north through Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania to the legendary Serengeti National Park! From there we will head back south through Malawi, another part of Zambia and Zimbabwe...

Before the trip we will post photos and information on our route planning, vehicle upgrades, packing, equipment, etc. During the trip we will post daily diary entries by means of a satellite phone, so don't miss out! We will be posting in both English and Afrikaans. Please become a follower on this blog and subscribe to our RSS feed.
Enjoy the journey!

DAY 43: We need your help, please!

Hello everyone! We’ve left the cool, lush surroundings of the Ngorongoro Crater and now find ourselves on the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, overlooking Lake Manyara National Park. Our campsite, Panorama Safari Camp, is very basic, but has a spectacular view over the Lake. The plan is to use most of the day tomorrow to explore the park.

And now we need your help. Last night we reached our data cap for the satellite terminal. We’ve used our sponsored 250 mega bytes of data in the first 42 days and would like to thank Sat4Rent, and Shana in particular, for your support thus far! Without the brilliant satellite equipment we would not be able to post so easily every single evening from wherever we are.

In order to keep the blog up and running we need to buy additional data. As you can imagine, it’s not cheap. Unfortunately this is not something we budgeted for, and therefore we rely on donations to keep www.serengetitrip.com alive. If we keep using data at the rate we have been, we’re going to need approximately R7700 to cover the satellite data costs. We will, however, try our level best to keep this figure as low as possible, but ideally we don’t want to stop posting every single evening.

So, if you’re enjoying our daily posts and don’t want it to end, please make a donation to our satellite data fund. Any small donation will help! Here are the bank details:

Name:  P de V Steyn
Bank:  ABSA
Type:  Savings Account
Branch:  Lynnwood Ridge
Branch code:  333 845
Account number:  16 38 18 95 81

Please use the word “Serengeti” as a reference. If you would be so kind, please make any donations over the course of the next week, so that we can determine exactly how much and how often we can post.

Thank you very much for your interest in our blog and for contributing! It would be a shame if www.serengetitrip.com had to end prematurely. Thanks also to Shana from Sat4Rent for giving us a discount on the additional data.

Baie dankie vir julle ondersteuning! Ons waardeer dis vreeslik baie!! Onthou, elke druppel in die emmer help!

Here are a few photographs of highlights so far, just to remind you of what we have experienced so far:
The two travellers, all fresh in the Makgadigadi Pans (Day 4)
One of the first lions of our trip! (Day 8)
One of the trip highlights - River rafting in the Zambezi River
The stunning scenes next to Lake Manze in Selous
Ji and Villiers on the beach south of Dar Es Salaam
Balloon safari over the Serengeti Plains

Groete uit Tanzanië
Villiers en Ji

Highlight of the day:
Villiers: Watching a little bit of World Cup Cricket
Ji: To get a $300 discount on a present for Talita, all because of my superior negotiation skills of course!

Lowlight of the day:
Villiers: The filthy bathrooms at Simba A this morning
Ji: That we ran out of satellite data

I camped at Simba A, during the www.writethruafrica.com Expedition 2005

Payed about R1500 for 2 adults incl the Crater charge.
I thought I was the only one who found the camp discusting, also found the tour operators in the area a little disrespectful in the way they drive you off the road and also dig into the passengers drinks and booze, 8 in the morning whilst they on a game drive.

Very dissapointing...
But will be back in October during the www.writetozerodegrees.com Expedition.

Lekker rus...

Hey Villiers, if you post the SWIFT and IBAN as well, you give us foreigners a chance to contribute too ;-)
Stay safe you 2, and keep up the good spirit :D

Wonder net... Dit sal BAIE SLEG vir ons wees, maar sal dit nie goedkoper wees as julle dalk net 1 foto per dag laai nie? Anonieme leek

Hi there Viiliers and JI, I agree with "Anonymous "that you might want to load your best 1 or 2 photos of the day and develop your writing abilities even further(?!!)I notice that you guys have 126 followers. Let's assume only 50% are really active, then it means a R122.22 contribution from each of us to be able to follow your wonderful experiences!Come on guys and girls, I will follow Alamarie's advise and hit the streets with a tin and a banner tomorrow to see whether I have some good fortune for a good cause...! Take good care.Luv. Fx

Amazing shots you took there. Nothing really quite compares to the great outdoors in Africa. Not only is the scenery great, you also get to see some of the most majestic animals on the planet.
