I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend?! We had a very relaxing day in Malawi, starting with a lie-in – something we don’t do often. As soon as we had the energy we drove to St. Ann’s clinic approximately 20 km north of our campsite. To his disappointment (and frustration) Ji had to sit wait in line for about an hour, only to find out that the doctor can’t do a urine test at the clinic. We’ll monitor his condition, which seems to be okay, over the next day and stop at a hospital on our way to Lilongwe tomorrow if necessary.
After our excursion we hit the curio shops outside Chitimba campsite. The carvers are young and full of energy and will do anything to convince you to buy some of their products. And these, I have to say, are amazing! Their carving skills are incredible and the mahogany wood they use is simply stunning. You’ll have to wait until we get home to see what we bought.

Ji took a long, deserving nap whilst I caught up on e-mails and other computer work. Who would have guessed that I would be sitting on the shore of Lake Malawi trying to determine the ages of nearly 50 leopard males!?? Very random and equally challenging.
Villiers next to Lake Malawi |
So you must be wondering what Malawi and our campsite is like? Well, the sad thing is that we’ll only be spending three nights in the Country of the Lake. Since our main objective of the Serengeti Trip 2011 has always been game viewing and wildlife photography, Malawi has always been the odd one out. Initially we planned to spend nine or ten nights here, but because we stayed longer in Tanzania than originally planned, we’re now sacrificing Malawi-days in order to give us enough time in Mana Pools and the rest of Zimbabwe. But I must say we’ve had a wonderful day in Malawi. The people are extremely friendly and the lake is simply stunning! The water is a beautiful dark blue and the surrounding mountains covered in lush green vegetation.

The stunning view from the bar |
Our campsite, which is run by a Dutch couple, is very neat, clean and comfortable. We’ve met some interesting travellers here and have enjoyed sharing stories about our journeys. Most of our time was spent in the beach bar, which has a view to die for! A selection of golden oldies is constantly playing over the speakers and there’s always a cold drink in our hands. Life is good at Chitimba! It will be sad to leave Malawi so soon, but I’ve decided that this is a whole trip on its own and one for the near future. Tomorrow we head south towards the capital, Lilongwe.
Nothing like a great view to make you feel better... |
Before I call it a day, here's an update on yesterday's photo competition: I took the photos of the leopard (nie jagluiperd, Tannie Almarie!) and the elephant and Ji those of the zebras and the lion cub. So most of you got it wrong! :) One thing you seemed to agree on, however, is that Ji's zebra shot is the best! And, embarrassing at it may be - I agree! Well done my friend!
Have a great Sunday!

Liefde
