Welcome to the Serengeti Trip 2011 Blog

Welcome to the Serengeti Trip 2011 Blog! We designed this website so that we can keep you posted on planning, packing and progress of our massive 70-day trip through 6 African countries early in 2011. The trip starts 20 January 2011 in Pretoria, South Africa, and takes us north through Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania to the legendary Serengeti National Park! From there we will head back south through Malawi, another part of Zambia and Zimbabwe...

Before the trip we will post photos and information on our route planning, vehicle upgrades, packing, equipment, etc. During the trip we will post daily diary entries by means of a satellite phone, so don't miss out! We will be posting in both English and Afrikaans. Please become a follower on this blog and subscribe to our RSS feed.
Enjoy the journey!

DAY 57: Relaxing in Lusaka

Today was another good day on the road! We got up around 07:00 at Mama Rula’s and then headed straight for the SPAR in Chipata to do some shopping. We managed to get everything on our list, except for Ouma rusks, corn on the cob and AAA batteries. We also treated ourselves with four fresh cheese scones.

Our biggest concern was the quality of the Great East Road that links Chipata and Lusaka, but to our relief it was in a much much better condition than the Great North Road that we drove approximately a month and a half ago on our way to Tanzania. We could comfortably drive between 100 and 110 km/h and met very few traffic cops along the 550-odd kilometres. There were a few sneaky potholes, but we safely manoeuvred the Hyena, which now drives like a dream again, through them.

Compare the Great North Road...
...with the Great East Road
We reached Lusaka shortly after three and are staying with Marlize Christo and their two girls again. A home-cooked dinner, comfy sofas and a good cricket match – what a treat! We will have to share a double bed again, however…

Two of our friendly hosts, Nadine and Anke-Mari
Ji and Christo watches as the West Indies throws away the game!

Tomorrow we head for Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. Oh, for those of you who were wondering – Ji feels much better!

Chat soon
Villiers

Highlight of the day:
Villiers and Ji: The wonderful dinner cooked by Marlize!!!

Lowlight of the day:
Villiers: That smirky Swanny bowled so well against the West Indies!
Ji: The West Indies losing to England in the Cricket World Cup

Mooi bly of mooi ry...
