Welcome to the Serengeti Trip 2011 Blog

Welcome to the Serengeti Trip 2011 Blog! We designed this website so that we can keep you posted on planning, packing and progress of our massive 70-day trip through 6 African countries early in 2011. The trip starts 20 January 2011 in Pretoria, South Africa, and takes us north through Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania to the legendary Serengeti National Park! From there we will head back south through Malawi, another part of Zambia and Zimbabwe...

Before the trip we will post photos and information on our route planning, vehicle upgrades, packing, equipment, etc. During the trip we will post daily diary entries by means of a satellite phone, so don't miss out! We will be posting in both English and Afrikaans. Please become a follower on this blog and subscribe to our RSS feed.
Enjoy the journey!

DAY 50: 50 days on the road...and counting!

It’s hard to believe, but today is day 50 of the Serengeti Trip 2011! And it’s also our last day in Tanzania. We’ve spent a full 34 days in this incredible country, covering thousands of kilometres, seeing amazing places, making good friends, and even learning a bit of Swahili! We’ll never forget the palm trees and lakes of Selous, the relaxed elephants of Tarangire, the hordes of game on the Serengeti Plains, the fever tree forests of the Ngorongoro Crater, the shy leopards of Lake Manyara and of course, the lazy lions of Ruaha. We’d like to thank all the wonderful people we’ve met along the way – Kayanda, Shaun and Elcke, Stan and Elly, and everyone else who made us feel so welcome in Tanzania. We hope to visit again very soon!

We left a scorching Ruaha around 11:00 and stopped in Iringa to buy some supplies. Since the Hyena has covered more than 10000 kilometres we also decided to give her a good service. First we cleaned her radiator with a spray gun in Iringa. Then we changed her oil, air filter and petrol filter at The Old Farm House, our overnight destination. Whilst we were busy with the service we noticed that our right front tyre was nearly flat. This was our first flatty of the trip! Not bad going if you ask me! We removed the tyre, filled a wheelbarrow with water and quickly found the tiny little hole that caused the trouble. Within minutes the tyre was plugged and back where it belongs.

Our very first flat tyre after nearly 11000 km!

Tomorrow morning we’ll head for Mbeya and then down to the Malawian border. It’s time to visit a new country! Thanks for those of you that gave us advice about Malawi and Mana Pools. We have four amazing game reserves still to visit - South Luangwa, Mana Pools, Mashatu and Mapungubwe!

It's almost weekend!
